This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences.
Take into account these tips for discovering and listening to new music:
The BIG Take-Aways:
As a musical artist, we have to often deal with more rejection than most professions are accustomed to. The question is, as people who have been involved in the music biz in some shape form or fashion for over 3 decades, what do we do to maintain a healthy mindset given all the intrinsic rejection? Our biggest tip is to make time each day to fill your mind with encouragement and strategies for success every single day. Just as you would take the time and effort to take care of your body, you should do the same with filling up your optimism and gratitude tank. Sometimes, it takes finding that quiet time to reflect on what you are grateful for, assess that misses do not define your future existence, and to set goals and strategies to put yourself out there again with an attitude of optimism that if you keep trying, what you are working at is bound to work. Learning something new every day that will help you move your enterprise forward is also a key to keeping a positive outlook. Because unless you can say you’ve truly tried EVERYTHING, you are not allowed to give up. Find some new avenues, search for new opportunities, and put yourself out there, so that you can find those experiences that are for you and so those opportunities can find you. You need to feed that belief that what you want is possible and that you are just the one to make it happen.
Another method for maintaining a healthy, positive mindset is to set short-term goals for yourself. Whether it’s committing to practicing every day or to pitching every week, find some goals that are dependent on you doing something regularly that sets you in the direction of your big vision and that you can attain just by showing up and doing what you say you will do. There is an incredible power in keeping your commitment to yourself, which will give you that extra bit of fuel when you need it and will help keep you positive on a daily/weekly basis, because you will see progress in whatever area it is that you are continually working on.
Since there is no way to cheat yourself to feeling good about goals, so if you are committed to getting Rock Star fit, actually doing the work to get toward it will fuel you, but “cheating” will only undermine your larger vision. So, no matter what your goals are commit to them and do the work you promised yourself you would do. When you do the work, you fall in love with yourself; with your personal power and capability. That alone will give you the positive energy to know that whatever goals you have set are possible, as long as you have breath in your body, you can make them happen.
Learn to accept your faults and your unique outlook—and don’t fight against them—so that you can find opportunities that are truly a good fit (and are not just trying to take advantage of an opportunity just because it is there).
There are no shortage of opportunities, which means that for your own peace of mind, you may need to reject (and/or ignore) some opportunities that shake your own confidence in your abilities. That is yet another tip for maintaining a healthy mindset. You do NOT need to allow any person, company, sponsor, opportunity to make you feel inadequate (and your intuition will lead you in that one—but that’s a discussion for an entirely different blog post!).
