7 tips for Creating social media content on a budget

(for the D.I.Y. Rock Star):

1. Plan your budget

We’ve talked about this before, but you should have your goals first, but be realistic with how much you’re working with. Sometimes, you MAY have to adjust your expectations to meet your actual budget. –For instance, we spend $75 a month on Facebook ads (set up during our Artist Mentoring experience—detailed HERE), but needless to say, we want MORE engagement with our content, but are not willing to increase the budget. Our options are to tweak the ads or to accept that this is the likely reach for the money we’re spending. As much as we would like to pull in droves more, we have to be content with the reach as it is until we start to make more, so that we can add more money to the ad spend. By being realistic, we are LESS likely to get frustrated.

2. Choose the right equipment

The kind of camera, lighting, and mic make a difference, so choose each carefully. However, in the beginning, you may need to use what you have on hand, which leads us to our next tip.

3. Make your own sets

Be creative with what you have. –We’ve been leaning into that green screen vibe, so that we can change our background as we see fit (with just $30 worth of fabric). –But there are OTHER ways to add some spice to your video content without spending a fortune. For instance, you can vary up your location and take the production out of your bedroom and into your back yard or to a local park. –One of my favorite indie artist videos is THIS one and she went to a local park to film. The bottom line is that if you think creatively about where you’re going to film your video content, you can save money AND be memorable.

4. D.I.Y. it

As we MIGHT have alluded to in item 2, use the resources you already have initially. Tools like your iPhone can help you film, and your laptop to record and edit content are perfect beginning choices. When you’re not even sure if you’re enjoying making content, you want to try to do it on the tools that are freely available to you. As you decide what you want, you can choose to upgrade items as they seem necessary.

5. Know when to invest

Sometimes it’s best NOT to cut the corners, if you KNOW you’ll like the final result MUCH better if you spend a little more. –It’s NOT in your best interest to save money, but HATE the results, so spend as you feel is necessary to get results that you are proud of. –Also, sometimes, saving yourself time by upgrading to an app that does MORE—and has more usable features—might be worth JUST to save editing and uploading your content.

6. Research, try, and try again

According to the post, you should check out what other folks are doing to see if you can put a fresh spin on what they are doing. Use them for inspiration. Or if you see an obvious void that you think you’d like to cover, do that. –In our case, when setting up the MPC, Bruce noticed that installing an SSD drive had not been covered in a clear way, so we made THIS video, which has received a boatload of views. It was something that WE wanted to see and did not mind doing.

7. Tenacity is free

We LOVED this bonus tip. Persistence is free, so don’t give up. If you know that you are in it for the long haul and are enjoying what you are making, don’t give up. It won’t COST you anything, but THIS ONE thing can be the key to gaining everything you want in your D.I.Y. Rock Star journey. So, don’t discount sticking with posting on social media, even when it seems that no one is responding. If you’re anything like us, seven years later, you will see a return on your time investment.
