5 Things We’ve Learned About Daily Blogging: Blog-vember 2018
5 Things We’ve Learned About Daily Blogging:
Blog-vember 2018
As you know, we have decided that Blog-vember 2.0 is our jam! We are pumped that this year, we are able to do it bigger and better. –We are more organized, BUT our goals were aimed higher; instead of offering up a post a day for 30 days, we planned to offer 3 posts a day—yes, a video, a podcast, and a blog post—for 30 days! That’s 90 posts in 30 days! —We MAY be crazy, but it seemed just the challenge that was worthy of the wisdom of nearly two years of blogging and vlogging, and one year of podcasting. This is what we learned:
Now, that it has been almost two months, I feel like I can share the surprising things I’ve learned about managing Facebook groups.
“The Devil is in the Details…”
One of my graduate school advisors used to tout her value by telling us “The Devil is in the details.” What she was saying was that folks COULD get lost in the weeds, as it were, but she was there to make sure that we all make it through unscathed. I must say that there is no more appropriate saying that would apply to this situation than this. While 90 posts in 30 days is really not THAT hard to muster, it’s the very details of graphics for each social media and for each variety of posts that can cause the most consternation. It is, in fact, that part that has been the hardest part of meeting this 30 Day Challenge that we have given ourselves.
I feel like I am putting out brush fires to stay on-top of it, but that’s part of the challenge, right? What I’ve been doing is just freaking out incrementally, and then stopping to get things done…. Once I get a few days scheduled—all three posts—I settle down….until I realize that I am falling behind and then I swiftly swoop in and get sh*t done! (See our Weekly Blog Planning Post to make sure that what’s important gets done.)
The bottom line is that, if I don’t stay on-top of the details, these posts don’t get done and that’s why it’s top of the list.
There’s a Clear Path
I really love that I know exactly what to do every single day while this 30 Day Challenge is on. Unlike some of my previous weeks, I can tell immediately what needs to go on my Getting Sh*t Done Weekly Blog Planner. I know that if the video post, podcast, and blog post are done in a day—and that each is promoted—then I have done all I can. I don’t have to worry about being overwhelmed and being confused about what to tackle first; if those 3 posts haven’t been scheduled, then I’ve got work to do. Simple. Period. That has been a nice advantage to giving us a time-sensitive challenge.
It’s motivating
I hop out of bed knowing what needs to be done and I can rest that night without knowing that these details are attended to. I feel a sense of urgency in getting things done, so that I can deliver on the promises that we’ve given to others and that we’ve given ourselves. Did you know that the promises I make myself help me feel accountable to our mission? By fulfilling these promises, I gain credibility with myself and KNOW that I can do all things that I set out to accomplish. Therefore, it’s no surprise that I hop out of bed ready to get those posts completed, scheduled, and shared. I am happy for Blog-vember for keeping that at the fore of my activity for the day.
Makes each hour exciting
I know I should probably wait to check my stats, when we are embarking on something this challenging, it is my natural inclination to check the stats every morning. The best part about all this, is that, almost magically, the stats seem to change every hour. It’s like Roberto Blake talks about, if you share daily, you see a wider distribution from your platform. We think we see that, when the daily posts for the past 3 days have been shared more widely than the ones we’d shared weekly previously. I think it boils down to the idea that “if you care, they care”; this makes us more likely to take on a challenge like this, that has us sharing more—than less—during this month. (It’s a great way to build downloads, listens, reads, and to draw more subscribers.) All I can say is that it is much more exciting a time than most others…
Something amazing to look forward to
Finally, I never know what this sharing with new and different folks will mean for us. I find messages from folks who have been watching us from the wings, but have yet to make themselves known, and from folks who are actively engaging with us. Either way, we are super excited to greet each new engagement. This is the most exciting time we have had since our 12” vinyl record was on the dance charts in 1991! We know that folks are watching and listening and sharing and engaging. That’s a musical acts’ and a music journalists’ dream. We are living that dream. Without asking permission from others and with just reaching out to you all. Again, I LOVE getting out of bed in the morning; I never know what new amazing things await us. That is a dream come true.
So far, we are LOVING Blog-vember 2.0—and we are just 4 days in!
Thanks for making our creative life so fulfilling.
