Tips for Buying Guitars (for the D.I.Y. Rock Star)

This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences.

Bruce has bought guitars online and he wasn’t crazy about it. Even though, you may have a certain brand or model of guitar, you should play a particular guitar in order to decide if it’s the best fit for you. Each guitar is uniquely crafted, so each one sounds different. There may be tons of Les Pauls out there, but each one is made differently.

I bought a Les Paul online and it is okay, and I bought a 1974 re-issue of a Fender Jazz Bass and it never was okay. As opposed to a Fender 1978 Jazz Bass and even though the strings were dead and the action was high, when I tried it, I loved it. That bass is still with me today.

Each time that we’ve gone to Sweetwater’s GearFest (see playlist at http://bit.ly/gearfestplaylist ), whether it was the Fodera Yin Yang (here’s the link to the unboxing: http://bit.ly/foderaunboxing ) or the Fender Telecaster Guitar (see unboxing at http://bit.ly/Fenderunboxing ) or the Sandberg (see buying at http://bit.ly/cmebassshopping and then unboxing at http://bit.ly/sandbergunboxing ), but I could tell these instruments were good for me. So, we’ve learned that Bruce MUST try the instrument that he is going to buy.

I am looking to buy a Marcus Miller Sire and I might have to go to the Chicago Music Exchange (CME link at http://bit.ly/cmebassshopping ) to find the one that I will buy. So that’s my advice for those looking to buy their own instrument. My advice is “The one you try is the one you buy.”

The next tip is to find yourself a good guitar tech. Shawn May (May Custom Basses at http://bit.ly/maycustombass ) is the guy that hooks up the basses and the guitars, so that they are just the way I like the action and the strings.
