This episode is a part of our Blog-vember 2019 trifecta of three posts a day—a video, a podcast, and a blog post. This year the focus is tips for the D.I.Y. Rock Star. We developed these methods through our own decades worth of experiences.

Take into account these tips for discovering and listening to new music:

The BIG Take-Aways:

As artists, we think it’s important to keep ourselves open and exposed to new and interesting music. Here are some ways to make sure that you are feeding that discovery of songs that you thought you knew—but learn to appreciate better over time—as well as to absolutely discover something you have never heard before.

While Bruce is a natural playlist maker—and discovers songs in stores, restaurants, and from public radio, I still use my tried and true iPod (that has over seven thousand songs loaded in it). Bruce listens when working out and I listen most mornings, when I am kicking my brain into gear or when I am doing work that does not require intense concentration. Bruce will dump entire albums into his playlists, so that he can be sure to hear albums that he may have not normally made an effort to hear. We try not to fast forward through, so that we can be sure to stay open to all things. Bruce says that he continually adds songs to the list as he discovers them, which is a method that I am open to trying. He says he likes using a playlist in Apple Music, so that he keeps the channel open to really and truly NEW music, whereas the iPod cannot guarantee that, since what is “new” is dependent on when last one has synched to the cloud.

After our discussion, Vox has decided to try creating playlists, as is suggested by Bruce, as a better method of discovering and experiencing music more meaningfully.
