I am certain that I am the last to hear about these. In fact, I am sure that enlightened folks who listen to National Public Radio on the regular are appalled at my lack of knowledge in this area. Be that as it may, the minute I heard of these morsel-sized concerts, I was hooked. In fact, I keep coming back for more.
Having said all that, the one that first hooked me on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts was the Tank and the Bangas. I liked the intimate setting. —Who doesn’t love books as a backdrop for a concert! (Check out our “Transform Me” video for more books as a performance background.) —The fact that the audience is in close proximity to the performers just feels right. Since there’s not much room for outlandish dancers, a light extravaganza, or a fog show that means the artists must trust in the conviction of the passion that they exude through their songs. Ultimately, it’s passion that kinda trumps all else. Paring down all frou frou assures that the band must emote to keep the audience engaged. It’s a formula that works if you care about the music and about getting to know the band.

So, yes, I, personally, am a Neanderthal, but we highly recommend checking out some of these bite-sized performances.
