Preview for SXSW 2023

This post loosely accompanies Gab & Jam, 281. South By Southwest Preview

It’s hard to contain our excitement with our upcoming trip to South By Southwest. By the time you see this episode, it’s likely we will be knee-deep in attending the festival, but we wanted to share a few things that we are most looking forward to during this trip.

See the episode for the full discussion.

Here’s the blog post that accompanies this episode:

3 things we’re MOST looking forward to for SXSW 2023:

1. 14 mentor sessions and 2 small group sessions

This feels like a first, but let us explain. On our first trip to South By Southwest, we DIDN'T even KNOW about the mentor sessions until we got there and, needless to say, there were no openings. 🙄 And last year, when we went to SXSW, we waited until the week before to start looking at the app—which we discussed in THIS post (https://bit.ly/sxsw2022sessionsblog )—but ONLY ended up scheduling one. 🙄🤷🏽‍♀️ —So, to have been able to log onto the app two weeks before and between the TWO of us schedule 14 mentor sessions and two small group planning sessions sounds like we hit the jackpot! 💰 So, while we are severely BUMMED that our hotel is 30 minutes away from the convention center, but STILL costs MORE than we’ve EVER paid, we are NOW excited that we MIGHT be able to “make some moves” and ACTUALLY get some strategy sessions with folks who are actually in the game sounds like a game changer! 👏🏾 So that even if we DON'T do anything but make and cultivate these relationships, it might have been well-worth the RIDICULOUS money we are spending to attend. 😳😬🤷🏽‍♀️ —At least, THAY the story we’re telling ourselves, so… 😎

2. Not happy about hotels going up to the point where a room is BY FAR the BIGGEST cost of the trip, but happy to take advantage of the free shuttles that we’ve been walking past for the last 3 years…🤷🏽‍♀️😬 I APPRECIATE Bruce’s view of where we will be, in terms of our hotel being much further away. So far, he has been looking at the bright sides, up to and including that there may be new places we discover as a result of being in a new area that we would have NEVER known existed, if we hadn’t had to go somewhere new. Also, that it may be EASIER to get an Uber, if we walk a little outside of the MAIN area, so that we will look for that kind of opportunity at the end of the day. And finally, that we are going to be SO busy ACTUALLY doing business that we won’t have time to be wandering about anyway and that we may simply be looking to get back to the hotel at the end of the day and not scurrying about, trying to find dessert! 😳😬🤷🏽‍♀️🙌🏾 And he’s right, so I am going to CHOOSE to stay positive and open to possibilities with him, since I am TRYING to make hopeful thinking my default. 🧘🏾‍♂️💡🤷🏽‍♀️👏🏾

3. Hoping to get back to international travel....

Hoping that, IF this one is our last—we could take 2 REALLY nice vacations for the cost of one trip! 🙄 We plan to get WAY MORE benefit than we EVER have. We’re even thinking if the costs go up any MORE for hotels, we might forgo South By Southwest 2024. –However, we JUST found out that Australia is hosting its very FIRST South By Southwest, so we MAY decide to go THERE next time, so that we can COMBINE international travel with South By Southwest, which is a win-win!

What about you? What business-related travel adventure are YOU most looking forward to?
