A Step Back to Move Two (or More) Steps Forward

My mind was exploding the variety of ideas and resources and opportunities, so much so that, as the Chief Content Officer around here, I feel I had to step back before I could move forward. “What is your next best step?” is a question that Renee G. from the “I Teach Blogging” podcast always asks.

As you may already know, I have begun to run our enterprises full-time now and with this, Renee’s question was smacking me in the face every time I looked at ALL of the things that needed to get done and of all of the things that I want to do. Re-focusing on a few running short-term and long-term goals has been what has helped me find a way through the mental clutter. I have to get back to our vision in order to do the work that feels “right” at the “right” time. (—And, if you know me, you know that “right” time is “right” now!)

Name Change (to D.I.Y. Rockstar Rewind)

We have recently decided to actually target our original market; emerging music/arts creators who want to make their art their life and livelihood. These are the folks that get what we’re laying down the most, we think, and so, voila! a target market has been identified. And, more importantly, the name of the monthly newsletter has changed to more accurately fit the “dirt” covered in our enterprise. We are building our rockstar life on our own, so we are looking for folks who are doing and/or are wanting to do that too.

Trip Re-cap

We’re back from Chicago. Yes, a massive trip for us. We went to see Hamilton, which turned into 2 college visits scheduled, as well as a trip to the Chicago Music Exchange. Well, once we arrived, one musical turned into two, which means that we decided to see Waitress—and got tickets at the last minute. We also ventured into the neighborhoods by taking the El train to the Chicago Music Exchange and, trying to get to the Bass Club of Chicago, caught our first Uber. –Yeah, I know; you must think us cave dwellers, but… —Not only was our Uber ride a pleasant one, but it was a key component to our day not turning into a hot mess. When we got to the door of what was supposed to be our destination, it was totally closed and so we stayed in the Uber and went to a vintage and boutiquey shopping district (called “Bucktown”). Before we even arrived there, it began to POUR rain, which would have meant that we would have be walking from the train—as was our original plan—and would have been standing outside of a place that was totally closed and would have had to have walked back to the train to get somewhere—ANYWHERE!—else. So happy that we got to the desired neighborhood and stopped at a quaint little sports bar—Jack and Ginger’s—and waited for the rain to abate. Once it did, we had had our “linner” (lunch meets dinner) and were able to browse all the cute little shops between there and downtown. We walked that 3 or so miles back to the hotel downtown and got ready for the play.

The bottom line is that we are taking more arts-filled excursions and exploring more of what each place we go to has to offer; all so that we can share more creative discoveries with you. One of the messages that drives us is that we should become inspired, so that we can inspire you, so here we are…. sharing.

Music Video Again

We can’t believe that our “Hero” video is at the half a million views on Facebook? Wow! (More on our celebration for that soon.)

Well, it’s been nearly a year and a half since we have made a narrative-based music video, so we are well overdue. Somehow, once our song “You’re Not Alone” was done, we felt led to start a blog post and an accompanying video. On the heels of the recent suicides of fashion designer Kate Spade followed by chef and traveler Antony Bourdain, we knew that we needed to share a message for those who need to connect with someone and/or something, so that they can reconsider and turn away from harming themselves. What’s odd is that Anthony Bourdain’s death was extremely jarring to me, but it was Bruce that wrote the lyrics to the song that spoke what was on my heart. Putting together a music video was extremely easy, since I was driven by the message.

July's Proud Moments:

New Freebies:

To come:

  • Videos: We’re working on a ton of videos. Got lots of footage and a lot to share. Just got to focus.

  • eBook: Found a more crystallized message for our eBook (with a side-kick of course) and had to open it back up. Will be live by next newsletter.

  • Facebook Group: Nudged along by the inspiring Caitlyn Bacher, we are starting a Facebook Group this month. Our focus will be folks who like a variety of musical styles and enjoy sharing. More on this soon.

  • Music Reviews: One of the advantages that we’re hoping to get from our Facebook Group is to learn of new and different emerging artists for us to review in Blooming Prejippie Zine. We know there are more folks out there, like us, who know of some really cool groups that need a little attention. (—Like, OMG, we just found out about a Belgium artist named “Stromae”! He’s amazing!)

The bottom line is that while we are growing, we are super-excited at all the places that it is possible to grow to.

Whew! That’s it. There it is.

What exciting new discoveries have YOU made this past month?

I want to challenge yourself to find something that lights your fire every month. Plan it out. Enjoy. Then, share.

Until next we meet, here’s wishing you love, peace, and chicken grease!

To come along with us on our journey to find that next creatively inspiring thing, be sure you’ve subscribed to both the blog and to our YouTube channel.
