What’s on our bookshelf? 2.0 📚

This post loosely accompanies Gab & Jam, 310. What’s on our bookshelf 2.0

As part of that holistic D.I.Y. Rock Star lifestyle, we like to share what we’re reading, since it’s possible that some of what we’re reading might be interesting to you. It’s been 5 years since we did an episode like this. (https://bit.ly/2Nk6kD3 )

Why do we bother reading these books?

1. Inspiration

2. Filling historical gaps

3. Love hearing how creative folks’ brains work

4. Pinch off bits of dialogue–and ESPECIALLY weird stories–to create new art

Which methods do we use to read?

As we probably mentioned before, we consumed these books in various methods, including in audio books, digital books, in paperback, and in hardcover formats. Needless to say, each type of book offers its own unique benefits and detriments. For instance, one of the things we like about both the audio and digital books is that you can listen/read from device to device, which makes it easy to begin listening in the car and pick up where we left off on the phone. This allowed us to listen while we were working out, driving in the car, or taking a walk. However, some books—especially the novel—we prefer to read in paperback and hardcover. There’s something about curling up with a book on the couch to absorb a story that is hard to compete with.

What categories are we sharing from in this episode?

We’ve tried to categorize this rough and ready list of 19 books. Also, we’ve included links for each book, in case you’re interested in knowing more. However, we receive NO compensation if you decide to buy through the link. We just wanted to make it more convenient for you to access the titles.

1. Biographies and Autobiographies:

As we talked about in our music documentaries episodes, we thrive on finding out more about our musical and artistic heroes. Sometimes, it helps us to know that, in some ways, we are similar in our lives and in our process and, other times, it is important to realize just how different in our journey we are from them. Here is a list of the ones that have been the most impactful, surprising, and entertaining:

  1. Room Full of Mirrors: A Biography of Jimi Hendrix, Charles R. Cross

  2. Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, Manning Marable

  3. The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, Dave Grohl

  4. Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir, Sly Stone

  5. Time Is Tight: My Life, Note by Note, Booker T. Jones

  6. Eruption: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen, Brad Tolinski, Chris Gill

Prince đź‘‘ has his own category within this list:

Needless to say, Prince was such a BIG influence on us—as well as, on many artists in our generation—so we went down the rabbit hole on him. After he passed—under such dubious circumstances—much has been written about him, his work ethic, his impact, and his art. Here are just a few of the books that we read on him:

  1. The Rise of Prince: 1958-1988, Alex Hahn, Laura Tiebert

  2. Dig If You Will the Picture: Funk, Sex, God and Genius in the Music of Prince, Ben Greenman

  3. Nothing Compares 2 U: An Oral History of Prince, Touré

  4. Prince and the Parade and Sign O' the Times Era Studio Sessions: 1985 and 1986, Duane Tudahl, Sir Elton John - foreword

  5. Prince in the Studio: The Exclusive Studio Stories behind the Hits: 1977-1994, Jake Brown

2. Inspirational:

As music artists, it is IMPORTANT to fill ourselves with inspiring ideas. It fuels our creativity machines. These are three of the fiction books that I read to allow a story to wash over me. Needless to say, I will be pinching off bits of dialogue to create our next art.

  1. Blue Shoe, Ann Lamotte

  2. One Woman Show, Christine Coulson

  3. The Stationery Shop: A Novel, Marjan Kamali

3. Productivity:

As you might KNOW, I am OBSESSED with working smart and not hard, so these are two of the books that I had heard SO much about, so I made it a point to read them. Both of them gave me additional awareness of time-wasters and gave me new strategies to try to get MORE time to do MORE of what I want to do.

  1. Atomic Habits, James Clear

  2. 4 Hour Work Week, Tim Ferris

4. Music Industry Specific:

This category has both music culture, as well as music business selections.

  1. Music Is History, Ahmir Khalib Thompson, Questlove

  2. Major Labels: A History of Popular Music in Seven Genres, Kelefa Sanneh

  3. Anatomy of 55 More Songs: The Oral History of Top Hits That @Changed Rock, Pop and Soul, Marc Myers
