Normally, we don’t encourage anyone to quit much of anything, but as we’ve gotten older, we’ve found that there are really a few instances when quitting is the BEST idea.

Even though we stress a lot about the kind of hustle you have to have as a D.I.Y. Rock Star, part of the secret sauce to NOT burning out and of enjoying the journey is learning when NOT to do things.  That’s right; learning WHEN to quit is the key to making it work. Because in all honesty, if you work, have a family or want to sustain other relationships, you CAN’T do EVERYTHING, so you have prioritize.  This list will help with figuring out where to put your time and energy.

Our guest today, Zandalee Indigo, is not only a fellow creative, but she has run how own blog for 4 years now.  She shares her thoughts on knowing when to quit.

Sure, it’s great to try new things, but what happens if you try it, but don’t enjoy it? Feel free to quit it. That’s what happened with sending a weekly blog email out to our subscribers.  I did it for about a month and a half before I realized that doing it was a real slog and that—FRANKLY—I just didn’t like doing it.

It’s natural to want to help our D.I.Y. Rock Star peers, but what happens if you think you’re giving MORE than you’re getting?  —We had a couple of instances of fellow songwriters who said they wanted to collaborate.  I hate to sound as if I am bragging, but we have a really nice recording studio, so needless to say, all the collaborating generally happens there.  However, there were a few times when we so much songwriting with them, but being recording engineers for this other person’s song.  We didn’t have to do that but a couple of times before we KNEW that this was not a reciprocal, productive relationship and so we stopped. –Use this as your permission to quit.

–And then there are the times when you don’t DON’T want to do something–and, in fact, you’d rather be doing NOTHING than THIS.  What do you do?  Well, life is short, my friend; we recommend that you do NOTHING before doing THAT thing.  Your soul will thank you in the end. That’s the appropriate time to quit.

Well, there it is; here are your 4 solid reasons for quitting something.  We always say that, as D.I.Y. Rock Stars, you should make your own mental health and those BIG goals you’ve chosen your FIRST focus.  And if that means you need to quit something—or someone—else to make it happen, we wouldn’t fault you.  We are sure you can think of other instances that we could add to this list.  Reply in the comments below with your additions.
